Small Bar to turn fire into art
Small Bar is looking to rise spectacularly from the ashes of an arson attack by enlisting the help of local street artists – just in time for graffiti festival Upfest.
The craft beer bar is exploring the idea of opening up the space to the community and allowing artists to transform a wall damaged after the Harbour Festival.
Jack Granger, Small Bar director, told Bristol 24/7: “If there are people in the community who want a really nice place to paint a nice mural, they can have that space and help us out, it will be great for everyone.”
The full damage of the fire is not yet known and bar management are hoping that scorch marks on the wall are just superficial.
Jack said the fire, which took place in the early hours of Monday morning, was an awful way to end “the best Harbour Festival we’ve ever been a part of”.
“We’re trying to take what was a really bad event, and turn it into something nice. To get something positive from a bad situation,” Jack added.
The idea to turn to local artists was put forward by a friend of the Bar on Twitter, who appealed directly to Upfest.
The street art and graffiti festival, which is the largest in Europe, takes place over the weekend and brings over 250 artists from around the world.

Though full repairs will take a couple of weeks, the Bar expects to be back to normal business hours on Thursday.
