16 food & drink openings to get excited about

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Sep 22, 2015

1. Bulrush
The name Stephen Markwick will bring back memories of wonderful meals in years gone by to the minds of many lovers of good food and drink in Bristol. Now, the very first restaurant from the former chef-owner of Culinaria and the eponymous Markwicks is being given a new lease of life. Bulrush was originally planned to open in Oxford but will now come to Cotham Road South, most recently the home of Juniper and before that Markwick and his wife Judy’s Bistro 21. Promising modern British, foraged foods and seasonal produce from George Livesey and Katherine Craughwell, Bulrush is due to open before the nights get too much longer.

2. Casamia
Bulrush could be a fine dining establishment, and you don’t get much finer than Casamia, moving from Westbury-on-Trym to the former General Hospital at the beginning of next year. The question is whether they are allowed to retain their Michelin star when they move premises?

3. The Burger Joint
Next to Bulrush in 2016’s Yellow Pages will probably be The Burger Joint, with their third restaurant opening in Fishponds in January. It will be the younger sibling of other joints on Whiteladies Road and North Street, and add to a growing number of places to eat out in one of Bristol’s most up-and-coming neighbourhoods.

4. Adelina Yard
Nearer the beginning of the Yellow Pages will be Adelina Yard, from chefs Jamie Randall (formerly at Odette’s in London’s Primrose Hill) and Olivia Barry (most recently at Murano, Angela Hartnett’s Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair) who will bring what Restaurant Magazine describes as “ambitious modern European food” with a tasting menu. Get a taste of the menu at a pop-up at The Elephant House in Bedminster on October 3 and 24. Follow them on Twitter via @adelinayard for more information.

5. Meat Liquor
If it’s burgers you’re after, Meat Liquor on Stokes Croft could be your new fix. A new piece of graffiti of a hirsute and be-capped chef with a fat slab of meat on the grill recently appeared but there is still no word on an opening date. “Not long now folks,” @MeatLiquorBrs tantalisingly tweeted early this month.

Does this mean that Meat Liquor on Stokes Croft is closer to opening? #bristol247 #igersbristol

6. 1847
More kind to your arteries will be 1847, a new vegetarian restaurant opening on St Stephen’s Street in the Old City. Named after the year the Vegetarian Society formed, 1847 was established by Damien Davenport in Manchester city centre in 2010 and has since opened in Birmingham and Brighton.

7. The Ox
Now well-established in a basement on Corn Street, The Ox will be opening a second restaurant above ground on Whiteladies Road next to Bosco pizzeria. It follows swiftly on the heels of The Ox in Cheltenham, the first venue outside Bristol from the team behind Hyde & Co, the Milk Thistle and Pata Negra.

8. The Old Market Assembly
The team behind the Canteen, No.1 Harbourside and The Harbourside Market will be collaborating with The Wardrobe Theatre, moving from above the White Bear pub in Kingsdown. The Old Market Assembly, opening in November, will contain the Wardrobe Theatre, a bakery, bar and kitchen headed up by the Canteen’s executive chef, Scott Hislop.

9. Superfoods
Superfoods is opening later this week on Park Street – “a new, exciting, clean, fast food restaurant combined with a healthy food and sports nutrition store”.

10. Herbert’s Bakery
The Superfoods press release promises they will be “storming the country soon”. Happy to stay in their home town of Bristol are Herbert’s Bakery, who will be opening a new bakery with sandwich, salads and gelato counters on Gloucester Road not too far from their Montpelier HQ.

11. Pinkmans
Sticking to baking, Pinkmans will be a fully-licensed bakery-cum-café due to be opening on Park Street this month.

12. Pizza
First it was burritos, then frozen yogurt. One of Bristol’s latest food trends is pizza – with a new pizza restaurant rumoured to be opening in the harbourside.

13. Wapping Wharf
The new development behind M Shed is likely to announce its first tenants soon. Expect some familiar names at Wapping Wharf soon.

14. Adam & Eve
If pubs are your thing, look forward to the Adam & Eve in Hotwells (below) being reopened by the Small Bar team.

15. Hophouse
And Small Bar’s King Street counterparts the Royal Navy Volunteer are soon to be taking over the Hophouse in Clifton Village.

16. The Knowle
Last but by no means least, the team behind the Grace, Greenbank and Zazu’s Kitchen are giving a new lease of life to The Knowle.
